The Timeless Glow of the Mid-Autumn Festival

A Legend Carried by the Moon
As the harvest moon rises high and vast, casting its silvery light across fields and cities alike, families throughout China and across the world pause to celebrate one of the most beloved traditions of all.
A Tradition and Reunion
Rooted in centuries of history, this festival is more than a celebration—it is a moment of reunion, a time when families pass wisdom and joy through generations, from grandparents to children.
A Festival of Timeless Beauty
More than just a festival, it is a reminder of what endures: love that transcends time. It is poetry in motion, verses sung under moonlit skies, where families and friends find harmony together.
The Legend of Chang’e and Hou Yi
No tale is more closely woven into the Mid-Autumn Festival than the legend of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess. Long ago, ten suns rose into the sky at once, scorching the earth. The great archer Hou Yi saved humanity by shooting down nine of them, leaving only one to light the world. As a reward, he was given an elixir of immortality.
Hou Yi wished to stay with his beloved wife Chang’e, so he entrusted her with the potion. One fateful night, when a greedy apprentice tried to steal it, Chang’e drank the elixir herself to keep it safe. She ascended to the heavens, choosing to dwell on the moon so she could remain close to Hou Yi.
Heartbroken, Hou Yi placed her favorite fruits and mooncakes under the night sky as offerings, gazing at the glowing moon in hopes of feeling her presence. This act of devotion inspired the festival we celebrate today—a night when families gather to admire the moon, share mooncakes, and honor timeless love and reunion.

The Rabbit of the Moon
Another cherished symbol often seen in Mid-Autumn Festival images is the Jade Rabbit, sometimes called the Moon Rabbit. According to legend, the rabbit lives on the moon as a companion to Chang’e, tirelessly pounding herbs with a mortar and pestle to create the elixir of life. In Chinese culture, the rabbit represents purity, devotion, and selflessness, qualities admired across generations.
During the festival, illustrations of the Jade Rabbit remind families of compassion and loyalty, while lanterns and mooncakes decorated with rabbit motifs bring good fortune and joy. For children especially, spotting the outline of the rabbit on the bright full moon turns the night sky into a canvas of imagination and wonder, deepening the sense of magic that surrounds the Mid-Autumn celebration.

–CNTO Los Angeles Celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival & Promotes Visits to China—
LOS ANGELES, (Oct. 6, 2025) – The China National Tourist Office (CNTO) in Los Angeles, is pleased to announce its participation in the recent City of Arcadia’s annual Moon Festival (Mid‑Autumn Festival), held Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. on the City Hall Lawn at 240 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia. Arcadia is a vibrant city located in the San Gabriel Valley, about 18 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is well-known for its diverse, multicultural community.
As part of its outreach, CNTO hosted an exhibition booth at the festival and collaborated with Tours4Fun to highlight exciting China travel itineraries, engage with festival attendees, and foster cultural and tourism exchange.
Also known as the “Moon Festival,” the City of Arcadia’s Mid-Autumn Festival is a festive evening under the moonlight featuring live performances, food vendors, mooncakes, children’s activities, and community gatherings. The festival is deeply rooted in Chinese tradition: it celebrates family reunions, gives thanks for the harvest, and looks forward to hopes for the future.
In Chinese culture, the Mid‑Autumn Festival (Zhōngqiū Jié, 中秋节) is one of the most important holidays after Chinese New Year. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunisolar calendar, coinciding with the night of the full moon — a symbol of completeness, unity, and prosperity. Over millennia, Chinese families have gathered to admire the moon, share mooncakes, light lanterns, and express gratitude for the harvest.
At the Arcadia Moon Festival, CNTO (Los Angeles) hosted a booth designed to welcome local residents, families, and festival-goers. Visitors were invited to learn about travel opportunities in China, pick up brochures, maps, and souvenirs, enter prize draws or promotions and speak with CNTO and Tours4Fun staff.
To enrich the engagement, CNTO partnered with Tours4Fun, a global online travel platform, to promote curated China tour itineraries. Through this collaboration, CNTO aims to showcase China travel in a way that is accessible and inspiring to Southern California audiences.
At the festival, CNTO and Tours4Fun distributed literature and special promotional offers for these tours, and staff were available to answer questions about how to book, best times to travel, and customizing itineraries to individual interests. The collaboration between CNTO (Los Angeles) and Tours4Fun in the Arcadia Moon Festival underscores several important goals:
